Somsak: “Nature is so beautiful I cannot paint it. Therefore I paint the feeling I have for nature and use the forms and colours from my dreams.”
After completing his studies, Somsak’s career flourished, earning him several awards and a starting stipend from the Amsterdam Foundation for Visual Arts.
Just before his first museum exhibition was scheduled in 2007, Somsak fell severely ill with a life expectancy of only a few months. He chose to retreat as a monk in a Buddhist temple to seek peace of mind through meditation and routine.
Contrary to medical expectations, his body recovered, and Somsak slowly regained his health. In the summer of 2013, Chaituch resumed his painting practice. Over time, he rediscovered his joy and skills, ultimately developing his unique, yet consistent and recognisable artistic style.
Somsak: “Art is music with rhythm and emotion for the eyes. Intertwining melodies in sparkling colours dance across my canvases to take you in a dream you never want to end.”
Today, Somsak Chaituch works in his own studio as an abstract expressionist painter, maintaining a consistent style in brushwork and colour composition. His use of brilliant and warm colours, along with curvaceous lines, pays homage to the nature and culture of Thailand. With his distinctive identity bridging the East and West and his exploration of the intersection between abstract and figurative art, Somsak takes viewers on a dreamlike journey to explore the essence of life. His paintings are described as music for the eyes, combining warm melodies and traditional rhythms within an abstract expressionistic framework, evoking a sense of vibrant excitement upon first glance.
